I shun the Light

I shun the light, behind curtains hush,

As I wake, in the wake of dreams.

Apply the comb and makeup tips,

Rinse the peppermint mouth, -clean.

Pop tarts or sour milk with Cheerio’s?

Still late for work, despite the haste,

In Tupperware bowls, fix on a taut bagel

Then, drive the miles to a downtown waste.

Accelerate, brake, accelerate, brake…

Rummage in draws full of toll tickets old

By the ‘Who moved my cheese’, I find

Expired upper pills, downed with espresso cold.

On a tiny screen, check pokes on Facebook

Messages and likes, keep up speed

Track like a dog on twitter forums

Give a dollar for a cause, follow the lead.

Dialling and filing, tallying numbers

Sorting, reporting, on a crisp white sheet

Cappuccino’s countless down the gully

Tottering on heels, despite sore feet

Ears to the ringer, eyes to the screen

Exit with the crowd in synchronized flow

Banishing thoughts of freeze-dried meals.

Embracing the interstate, on route to my hole.

Sporadic tail lights, like fireflies twinkling;

Diet cokes in automatic vending machines;

Inanimate friends and pointless parties,

Hangovers, beer-breadth and smoke ring dreams.
