About
Born in Dhaka in March 1969, her journey has taken her across continents and cultures, shaping who she is as an artist. In 1977, she moved to the UK with her parents where she spent her formative years immersed in cultures from both East and West. Her exposure to such diversity influenced her thoughts and sparked a passion for creativity.
Surrendering to the conventional expectations of South Asian family values, her desire to pursue art was on a hold as she went for a degree in Sociology and later a Bachelor’s in Business Administration.
She discovered a unique voice as a creative when words and colors seems to connect strongly with her soul. Being a self-taught artist and poet, she always felt the need to express her inner self through a brushstroke or a line of verse. With her poetry she has published 2 books, and one of short stories. All three poems she entered for international competition has been published, receiving editor’s choice awards.
Art has been her quiet companion for many years, but it wasn’t until 2020 that she allowed herself the space to dive deeply into this world, spending countless hours developing her technique, experimenting, and discovering a voice that feels true to herself.
Much of her work in mixed medium flows intuitively beginning with an idea that later evolves within the canvas becoming an unpredictable and mysterious blend of memories and feelings brought to life.
Her subject for this collection is to portray their strength, resilience and endurance of women, as they struggle against social pressures and oppression. Preferring to work with mixed mediums, she likes to create paintings that evoke emotions, if not immediate, then on a subconscious level, using colors and symbolism to convey their beauty, fortitude and timeless elegance.
Shilpi Ali is a wife and mother to children. She loves to travel and cook and hopes to develop her skills further in Art and poetry in the future.
